A longtime Abington resident is temporarily without a home after a smoky fire damaged his Hancock Street house.
Abington Fire received a call Wednesday just after 11 a.m., reporting heavy black smoke coming out the front door of the green house, which is located at the intersection of Hancock and Chestnut streets.
Deputy Fire Chief Jarrod Driscoll said firefighters immediately struck a second alarm upon arrival, summoning aid from Rockland, Whitman, and Holbrook.
“Abington Engine 4 initiated an aggressive fire attack knocking down the bulk of the fire,” Driscoll wrote in a post on the Abington Fire Department’s Facebook page. “The homeowner was evaluated by a Whitman Ambulance and transported to a local emergency room with non-life-threatening injuries.”
The fire was knocked down within minutes, and was mostly contained to the room in which it started. Driscoll was not able to say what started the fire.
Traffic through the busy Hancock/ Chestnut Street intersection was blocked off for more than an hour while firefighters extinguished the blaze and checked the house.
Veterans Services Director Adam Gunn and the American Red Cross is helping find temporary housing and provide other needs for the homeowner, who is a veteran.
No injuries were reported to firefighters who responded.
