Popular Abington ice cream shop Cream will host an “Easter Egg Drive-Thru” for kids this Saturday, April 11th, from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. at its Bedford Street location.
Assisted by the Abington Lions Club, Cream will be handing out approximately 600 eggs filled with coupons for a free kiddie cup, as well as cookies made by Ginger Betty’s Bakery to the first 300 people who signed up for the drive-thru event on Facebook.
Owners Craig Perry and Lenora Cushing wanted to help children in the community celebrate the Easter holiday despite the social distancing restrictions put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Parents with children have no place to take them,” said Cushing. “Schools are closed, they can’t visit their grandparents or have playdates or birthday parties.
“I’ve had a number of people calling the shop to see if we were doing anything for the kids because they always loved events we held in our restaurant.”
The Easter Bunny will also be making a special appearance. However, it will maintain a six-foot distance away from cars. Volunteers handing out eggs and cookies will be wearing masks and gloves.
In the past, Cream would give children a plastic egg with a coupon inside for a free sundae or frappe on Easter. Perry and Cushing realized they had extra plastic eggs left over from last year and desired to keep the tradition going.
Wanting to help another small business during this time of crisis, Cream purchased 300 cookies from Ginger Betty’s Bakery in Quincy. Ginger Betty’s has been a supporter of Cream since its inception by donating gingerbread houses at Christmastime as a raffle for the community.
Members of the Abington Lions Club jumped in to help assemble the 600 eggs.
“The Lions are proud to help a local business for this event,” said Joe Russell, Abington Lions Club President.
“Abington supports us and we support Abington,” said Cushing.
“It we can do something to bring a little cheer – we will.”
