First marijuana shop now hiring

Bud’s Goods and Provisions, which is set to be Abington’s first recreational marijuana retail shop, is staffing up in advance of its projected May opening.

The company is advertising for a Retail General Manager and Assistant Retail Manager for its upcoming Abington location. The company already operates a retail shop in Worcester.

Bud’s will be located at 1540 Bedford Street. It has received all needed local permits; the store’s interior is currently being built out. It still needs a final inspection and approval from the state Cannabis Control Commission before it can open.

Company CEO Alex Mazin said during the permitting process he will be looking to hire a number of Abington residents to work in the business.

Under a host community agreement, Abington will receive 3 percent of all gross receipts, which must be used to offset impacts from the business. Revenue generated from an additional 3 percent local sales tax can be used for any municipal need.

Mazin said the average retail marijuana shop makes about $8 million in sales, which would generate $240,000 in local sales taxes for Abington.

A second retail shop, Green Harbor Dispensary, is still in the local permitting process.

Town Manager Scott Lambiase is meeting with two other two marijuana companies interested in opening up retail shops and grow facilities in Abington.
