Abington’s new police chief has decided against coming to town after all.
Town Manager Scott Lambiase confirmed that Jamie Calise, his choice to be Abington’s next top cop, reversed course days after Lambiase met with the Board of Selectmen to introduce him and discuss contract details.
Calise is currently the police chief in Truro. His name was not released at the time because he had not yet given notice to his town.
“He did officially withdraw,” Lambiase told Abington News. No reason for the change of heart was given.
Lambiase, who is charged under the town’s charter with hiring the Police Chief, said he won’t be reposting the position, and will instead look to the pool of candidates already under consideration.
“I do not intend to start over,” he said. “I will invite a few more candidates to participate in an assessment before making any decisions.”
Lambiase has been assisted in the search process by Public Safety Consultants, LLC, as well as a small committee of Abington residents. Although Lambiase chooses the chief, the Board of Selectmen can opt to confirm or veto the selection by a 2/3 vote.
Current Police Chief David Majenski is scheduled to retire on Aug. 31, under an agreement reached with the town last year.
