No school Friday; year’s first snowstorm on its way

Abington schools will be canceled closed Friday as the season’s first big snow storm barrels through the area.

The latest forecasts call for between 4-8 inches of snow across the South Shore, with some of the strongest bands passing through during the morning rush hour.

Projected snow fall totals from the National Weather Service

Snow is expected to begin in the early morning hours and wind down by early afternoon

“We’re ready for it,” said Public Works Director John Stone.

The town’s sheds are stocked with over 600 tons of salt. Stone’s team also has

11 trucks, 2 front-end loaders and a  backhoe ready for salting and plowing, plus four machines ready to plow sidewalks. In addition, another 30 pieces of equipment owned by private contractors will help clear Abington roadways.

Residents are asked to help by not parking in the roads or on sidewalks during the storm, clear storm drains of snow and debris, clear out fire hydrants, and refrain from shoveling snow into the street.
