WEEK AHEAD: Storm cleanup lingers, Reilly named coach, MBTA zoning meeting on Jan. 29

Nothing like a tropical storm in December.

A powerful gale brought drenching rains and near-hurricane force winds to the region Monday, but the town weathered it pretty well. At least compared to other communities. More than half of Norwell, Hanover, Halifax, and Hanson were without power Tuesday morning, plus 92% of Scituate.

Not to say the storm didn’t have local impacts. About 1.62 inches of rain fell during the storm, according to DPW Director John Stone.  Some students Monday had to be dropped back off at school because buses couldn’t get down their roads. Even later in the week scattered trees remained down on a few roads as cleanup crews were strained to keep up.

But it’s way better than what’s going on in parts of New Hampshire and Maine. Yikes.

ICYMI: REILLY NAMED NEW FOOTBAL COACH

The green smoke wafting from the Abington Depot confirmed what many were anticipating: Abington High School has a new football coach, and it’s longtime assistant coach Ed Reilly. The AHS and Holy Cross alum will succeed Jim Kelliher, who wrapped up his hall of fame career this fall after 50 seasons, 312 wins, and 5 state titles.  Reilly started as a volunteer coach for the freshman team in 1997, became varsity offensive coordinator in 2001, and served as associate head coach the past two seasons. Green Wave football insiders rave about Reilly’s mastery of the Xs and Os, and his connection with the players. Reilly said in an announcement Monday he anticipates keeping most of the coaching staff from this past year.

MEETING ON NEW MBTA ZONING DISTRICT SCHEDULED FOR JAN.  29

As we reported earlier this month, the Abington Planning Board has endorsed a new multi-family zoning district as required by a new state law. It still needs Town Meeting approval, which will be requested this coming April. The Board is scheduling a public informational meeting on January 29. It will be a chance for people to learn more about why this is being proposed, where the proposed district would be located, and the ramifications of the approves or rejects it.
