Stormy pattern leaves Abington water-logged; another storm coming Saturday

Back-to-back storms have left Abington’s streams and wetlands full of water and town officials are warily eyeing another storm this weekend.

More than two inches of rain fell overnight Tuesday into Wednesday washing away the remnants of Sunday’s snowstorm.

Despite the high winds, there were no reported power outages, according to Fire Chief Jack Glynn.

The water level in Island Grove Pond following Wednesday’s storm was starting to seep under the fence along Central Street.

The public works department spent the day clearing drains and monitoring flooded areas. Residents also uncovered storm drains, turning on sump pumps, and sweeping up debris.

At one point Wednesday morning, the Shumatuscacant River was flowing over the Ralph Hewlerd Dam behind Memorial Field and the Beaver Brook Elementary School. Further downstream, the rushing river poured into Island Grove Pond, which was spilling over its banks along Central Street.

“We could use some dry weather to say the least,” said Public Works Director John Stone.

However, another soaker is expected early Saturday, with the possibility of an additional inch or two of rain.

Residents are encouraged to make sure storm drains near their homes are cleared of debris. On-street parking is not allowed during winter months. Sump pumps should be discharged across yards and not directly into roadways and storm drains.

Water rushes down sluiceways alongside the Ralph Hewlerd Dam behind Memorial Field.
