No surprises in Abington primary results; Biden, Trump come in first

Abington voters chose the two frontrunners for president by healthy margins during primary voting on Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

More than twice as many Republican ballots were cast as Democratic ballots, driven by a still semi-competitive presidential primary and high interest in the local race for state committee members.

Former President Donald Trump earned 1,173 votes, or about 74 percent of all Republican votes cast, putting him far ahead of his former ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, who received 372 votes.

On the Democratic side, current President Joe Biden received 520 votes or about 78 percent of all Democratic votes. The “No Preference” option received almost as many votes (71) as Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson combined (75).

In the closely watched race for Republican State Committeeman, Abington voters chose Alex Hagerty, a former town selectman, over Gary Innes, of Hanover, 1,102 to 374. State committee seats are apportioned by state Senate district; Abington is part of a district that includes Quincy, Holbrook, Abington, Rockland, Hanover, and parts of Braintree. In the race for state committeewoman, Edith Hughes, of Quincy, edged out Beth Venuto, also of Quincy, 669-645.

These results reflect approximately 2,317 ballots cast Tuesday as well as during early voting, according to Town Clerk Leanne Adams. Abington has just over 10,000 registered voters.
