HARRIS, EMERY, HENDRIKSON EARN SEATS THROUGH WRITE-INS; ASSESSORS SEAT STILL UNFILLED

Former Health Board Chairwoman Susan Emery and Building Commissioner Jason Harris both won seats on the Board of Health via write-ins, Town Clerk Leanne Adams confirmed. Nobody ran for the two open Health Board seats last month, and Emery and Harris received the most write-in votes. Eric Henrikson, a past Sewer Commissioner, is back on the board after also winning via write-in. The open seat on the Board of Assessors remains unfilled, however. Joseph Shea and Alex Bezanson, both former selectmen, received the same number of write-in votes. That vacancy will be filled through a joint meeting between the Board of Assesors and Board of Selectmen.

COMMUNITY PRESERVATION CHAIR INTERESTED IN OPEN SELECT BOARD SEAT

The Select Board hasn’t officially called for a special election to fill its vacant seat, but there’s already at least one candidate interested. Amanda Zompetti, the current chairwoman of the Community Preservation Committee, announced this week she plans on running for the Select Board seat that was held until recently by Kevin DiMarzio. DiMarzio resigned May 3 with slightly less than a year remaining on his term. The Town Charter says vacancies on the Select Board shall be filled by a special election if the vacancy occurs more than three months before the next scheduled Annual Town Election.

Zompetti, a resident of Pilgrim Street, is also a member of the Board of Health and treasurer of the Beaver Brook Elementary School PTO. The Select Board will meet again on Monday, May 20.

CANNABARN EYEING JUNE OPENING; GREEN HARBOR SHOP WITHERS AWAY

After more than a year of waiting, CannaBarn, a retail cannabis shop located on Adams Street, finally received its final license from the state Cannabis Control Commission this week and is eyeing a June opening. General Manager Greg MacDonald said the company has to order some products and schedule final inspections with the town and state, but then it will be ready to open its doors. An official opening date will be known soon, he said. CannaBarn has rehabbed the former Jenkins and Simmons Trucking Terminal office at 678 Adams Street into an agricultural-themed retail cannabis shop. It will be the town’s third retail shop: Bud’s Goods opened in 2022, and Natural Agricultural Products opened this past March.

Elevated Roots is in the process of building out its storefront at 1432 Bedford Street. That company already operates stores in Kingston and Halifax. Meanwhile, the Cannabis Control Commission confirmed to Abington News that the license for Green Harbor Dispensary has expired. Green Harbor had the permits to build a shop at 1410 Bedford Street, but ran into problems while demolishing the existing building.
