The skies over Abington will be aglow once again on Saturday, June 8th, when Abington Celebrates commemorates the town’s Founders’ Day weekend with fireworks and a host of other family-friendly activities scheduled for June 7-9.

The weekend festivities begin Friday evening, June 7, with the annual Kick-off Cookout from 5-7 p.m., hosted by Abington’s first church, the United Church of Christ (UCC), located at 10 Bedford St.  Enjoy free food and raffles.  The UCC Thrift Shop will also be open with lots of bargains.  At 7 p.m., attendees will be treated to Big Band music in the sanctuary by The Defenders.

Saturday, June 10, will be fun-filled day from start to finish!  The annual Kids’ Fishing Derby is back from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Central St., across from the town DPW yard. The derby is open to all children ages 6-13 (accompanied by an adult). Bait, hooks, and bobbers will be supplied.  Prizes will be awarded.

From 9:30 a.m. -1 p.m., the Chua Linh Quang Buddhist Temple will be hosting an open house and offering tours. Next door at Butterfly Park, children can make and pot their own plant to take home.

In the Abington Police Station parking lot, the Abington Girl Scouts will be hosting “Chalk it Up!” from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Everyone can try their hand at sidewalk chalk art! At 11 a.m., take part in the Island Grove Guided History Tour, beginning from the Lake Street side of the Island Grove Bridge.

On Saturday evening, gather the family and your blankets and lawn chairs for family fun, food and fireworks at Memorial Field. Music for the evening is sponsored by Abington Summer Concerts, featuring cover tunes from the band Wolfpack from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Lace up your little ones’ sneakers for a short Kids Fun Run at the field at 5:15 p.m. Take in a martial arts demonstration by Boston Tae Kwon Do, or enjoy face painting, balloon characters, bounce houses, caricature drawings, face painting, a dunk tank, field games, and more.

Enjoy ongoing evening field events such as the traditional 50/50 Abington Celebrates Fireworks Raffle, food/beer/wine at the American Legion Building, and lots of fun sponsored by a range of Abington organizations and charities offering great food on the field, activities, and entertainment for the whole family!

The highlight of the evening will be a spectacular fireworks display at 9 p.m. by Northstar Fireworks.  (Fireworks rain date, Sunday, June 9)

On Sunday, June 9 the United Church of Christ in Abington will host “Worship at the Grove” at 10 a.m. at Island Grove Park, at the Abolitionist Stone, near the point.  All are welcome!

For Abington history, head on over to the Dyer Memorial Library, 28 Centre Ave., from Noon – 2 p.m. and enjoy a tour of the library, learn about Ancestry Research, and meet local historian John Galluzzo as he delves into the reactions of South Shore towns to the infamous Boston Tea Party.

The weekend will close at 6:30 p.m. with music at Abington High School Auditorium provided by the Abington Town Choir, Abington Community Band and the Island Grove Chorus directed by Patricia Hoitt.
