Mom on the Go trucks into new Abington home

Almost a decade ago, June Somers left her corporate gig to start a food truck.

Now, with three Mom on the Go food trucks in her fleet and a well-known South Shore brand, Somers is celebrating the opening of her new Abington headquarters at the revamped Buffam Shoppes.

“Everyone loves grilled cheese,” said Somers, who launched her first food truck specializing in the popular toasted sandwich in 2016. “Whether a kid or an adult, it’s just a food that’s universally loved and we do it right.”

Somers and her Mom on the Go team is hosting an open house this Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at its new Centre Ave location.  The festivities include food, games, raffles, and live music from Aldous Collins.

Aside from serving as prep space for her business, the location also features a storefront where customers can pick up take out orders on Wednesdays.

Somers started offering heat-and-eat meals for takeaway during the COVID pandemic. They proved so popular that Mom on the Go made them a regular weekly feature. On Wednesdays, customers can order family-size servings of greek chicken and lemon orzo, mac & cheese (with pulled pork), lasagna roll up, beef stew, shepherd’s pie, teriyaki chicken, and more. And for $10 more, they’ll even deliver it to your house.

“Maybe we’ll add other days if it grows,” she said.

The eatery is also now offering a giant grilled cheese. The 13-inch-by-18-inch sandwich requires specially made bread and 75 slices of cheese, and it can feed 30.

Somers was working as a corporate VP when food trucks first started popping up in Boston more than a decade ago. But the Hanover resident noticed she only saw them in the city and not back home.

“I always loved to cook and so I wanted to do it,” she said.

Her first truck took off and she opened a storefront in the Hanover Mall in 2018 shortly before the venerable plaza closed. It’s continued to grow to the point Mom on the Go now operates four crews in three trucks plus pop-up tents. During the warm months, she employs as many as 17 to handle the demand.for appearances at private parties, weddings, and corporate events. This past summer Mom on the Go made weekly appearances at the Abington Street Hockey league games.

“It’s not a bad job when you pop up somewhere and people start clapping,” she said.

Mom on the Go’s new space is located in the former headquarters of the H. H. Buffam company, which was an early auto manufacturer more than a century ago. Spencer’s Pizza currently occupies the front of the building.

“It’s completely rehabbed,” Somers said. “It’s gorgeous.”

Two other food trucks also call the property home: Ellie’s Treats and Casey’s Curbside.

The commercial complex has undergone a sizeable rehab over the past year, including new wooden porches and delivery space at the century-old brick building, and a fully rehabbed retail and commercial space along the property’s western edge.
