8th Annual Abington Celebrates Oktoberfest this weekend

Abington Celebrates, an all-volunteer committee that brings low-cost or free, fun events to the community, is hosting its 8th Annual Oktoberfest from Friday, October 4 through Sunday, October 6.

On Friday evening, October 4 join the Jeff Coombs Memorial Foundation for a night of Trivia Fun and Raffles!  The event runs from 7-9 p.m. at the Abington American Legion Post #112, and is hosted by Mike “Sarge” Riley, of WEEI Radio and the voice of the New England Revolution. Those interested can form teams of up to 8 people. Cost is $25 per player, and can be paid via Vemno (@jeffcoombsfund), Paypal (jeffcoombsfund@gmail.com), or check.  Text 617-909-5768 to register.  There will be a cash-only bar; bring your own snacks.  Proceeds will benefit an Abington family dealing with medical costs due to illness. 

Saturday, October 5th events begin with the Oktoberfest Marketplace featuring vendors, crafters, raffles, music, food and fun at Abington’s first church, the United Church of Christ, located at 10 Bedford St., from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Thrift Shop and the popular Christmas Annex will be open for additional bargains.

Anyone interested in the history of Island Grove can participate in a free guided “Walking Tour” by the Historical Society of Old Abington from 11 a.m. to noon. The tour meeting place is under the arch on the Lake Street side of the bridge. The Dyer Memorial Library, located at 28 Centre Ave., will be open for public tours and ancestry research from 12:30 – 3 p.m.

From 4-6 p.m. the Rotary Club hosts “Taylor Cormier Sings Sinatra” at the Abington High School Auditorium.  Tickets are $25 per person.  Contact 774-218-8271 for tickets.

Young children will enjoy the Abington Lions Club’s “Not-So-Scary-Woods” from 3-6 p.m. Costumes are encouraged. Held at Island Grove Park, the free event also features other fun activities such as Touch-a-Truck, music, demonstrations, activities, and food for purchase. Please note Park Avenue will be closed to traffic from 3-6 p.m.  Visitors will be able to park on both sides of Central Street during this event. Saturday’s event closes out with the lighting of the great pumpkin at Pumpkin Point. Also, enjoy Movie Night at 6 p.m. featuring “Hocus Pocus 2”, co-sponsored by Abington Celebrates and Abington’s Park & Recreation. 

At 7:30 p.m., children can grab their flashlights and lanterns, and meet at the great pumpkin for a “slightly” spooky Treasure Walk with Abington’s Favorite Pirate – Blackbeard!  All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The fun-filled weekend wraps up with a full day of events on Sunday, October 6, beginning with the 3rd Annual Freaky Flea Market in front of Beaver Brook Elementary School. The Flea Market runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. DJ “Back in the Day” will be spinning tunes.

Mostly free activities for the whole family will be the feature of an Oktoberfest Family Celebration from noon-3 p.m. It will be held in front of the Frolio Middle School, American Legion Poat #112, and Memorial Field (behind the Frolio).  Activities include lots of kids’ activities and games games, face painting, a balloon artist, hay rides, party pigs, a farmers’ market, a flu shot clinic, and a beer garden and food for sale by the American Legion. 

Participants can try to win a gorgeous fall display donated by Seoanes. There will be demonstrations by Boston Tae Kwon Do Academy of Abington, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Dept K-9 Unit, and Dance Dimension. 

Friends of Abington’s Dog Park will host a Dog Costume Contest at 2:15 p.m. for a $3 entry fee, a best-dressed stuffed animal contest at 1 p.m., for a $1 fee, and raffles. The Abington Summer Concerts Committee is sponsoring the Double Eagle Oktoberfest German Band from 1-3 p.m. 

Abington Celebrates is a 501c3 corporation and relies wholly on private fundraising to keep weekend events alive for the Abington community.
