The Abington High School Drama Club is tackling Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical Into The Woods for its spring production, with four performances scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Show time Thursday and Friday is 7 p.m. Curtain rises on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased either at the door or through this link.
Into The Woods ties together multiple Brothers Grimm fairy tales including Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood. The show was first performed in 1986, and has been revived multiple times, including a big 2002 Broadway run, and a 2014 Disney adaption.
The musical’s popularity amongst younger performers is a reason it was chosen, according to Director Susan Mullen.
“Last year during our last “Once Upon a Mattress” mic check, we allowed students to sing songs from any show they wanted,” she said. “So many chose ‘Into the Woods,’ so I knew there was an interest in the show.”
The original show won Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Book, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress. The 2002 verison won for Best Revival.
This is the first time Abington Drama has performed the show.
“I chose ‘Into the Woods’ because it’s a show our program has never produced before, so it felt like an exciting opportunity for our drama club. We also have an especially talented group of students this year, including many remarkable vocalists, and we wanted to choose a musical that would challenge them and allow their talents to really shine,” she said. “‘Into the Woods’ requires strong storytelling, musical precision, and emotional depth, so it was the perfect fit for this group.”
