Cooling center available for Abington seniors

With temperatures soaring into the high 90s today, the Town of Abington has is opening the Senior Center as a “Cooling Center.”

In a release, Acting Town Manager Scott Lambiase, Council on Aging Director Suzanne Djusberg, and the Abington Police Department said the center will be open Monday until 10 p.m.

The center can be used for Abington seniors who are in need of a place “to stay out of the heat and chill.”

Djusberg said seniors can bring a book, do a puzzle, or just hang out and cool off.

Social distancing guidelines will be in effect, she said. Seniors will need to wear a mask and remain at least six feet away from others. Djusberg advised seniors to call before coming over to make sure the center isn’t over capacity. And then when they arrive, they need to check in and have their temperature taken.

The Senior Center building has been closed to the public since mid- March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Council on Aging employees have continued to work and provide services during that time, however. Seniors in need can call Djusberg at 781-982-2145.
