Labor Day has come and gone. Farewell summer. Start sprinkling pumpkin spice everywhere.
At least the arrival of September brings with it the start of Green Wave fall sports.
As detailed below, every Green Wave team kicks off their season this week, including a number of home games.
Friday’s varsity football game is notable because it’s the start of Jim Kelliher’s 50th — and final — season as head coach. A pregame ceremony commemorating his golden anniversary year is scheduled for about 6:45 p.m.
Abington News will start publishing preseason previews starting tomorrow. (And is there more to fall in Abington than athletics. Of course. And we’ll spend time covering as much as we can.)
ROAD WORK AND BRIDGE UPDATE
Contractors are busy this week putting a leveling course on Lake Street, Wilson Place, and Chapel Street. The roads will be paved once the castings are raised.
Final paving for the Central Street bridge is still on hold. DPW Director John Stone said the project contractor hopes the paving crews will be available later this week. The 19-week project is now on week 20. Stone says the 45 days of rain this summer has thrown many contractors behing schedule.
HEARING NEXT WEEK ON HANCOCK/CHESTNUT ROUNDABOUT WORK
Residents will have a chance to share their thoughts on a proposed roundabout at the Hancock Street/Chestnut Street intersection. The intersection is one of the most dangerous in towns, and shceduled for a full overhaul in two years. MassDOT is hosting the in-person public hearing next Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m., at Town Hall. Early designs for the roundabout include shaving down the slope of the Hancock Street approach.
