125+ items up for bid Thursday at AHS Junior Class Auction

Bouquets of Lottery tickets, gift cards to local restaurants, baskets of Abington-centric items, mini- vacation packages… the list goes on and on.

All this and more are up for grabs Thursday at the annual Junior Class Auction.

The auction, which takes place on the high school side of the combined middle/high school, runs from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. It is open to the general public.

The event is the biggest fundraiser sponsored by the Abington High School Junior Class every year. It raises thousands of dollars that help underwrite the cost of the junior prom, homecoming dance, and senior class gift.

“It’s a long-running tradition now and the largest fundrasier any class does at the high school level,” said Charlotte Hernandez, who will be among those running the event

The effort is led by the junior class officers — President Jakob Khalil, Vice President John McGrath, Secretary Kevin Lopes, and Treasurer Michael Reilly — as well as parents. Work on the auction started back in September, Hernandez said, and will continue right up until Thursday.

Some of the auction items include a Solo stove, a Yeti cooler, will preparation with a local attorney, senior photo packages, and dozens of gift baskets. There also, of course, is the standard $550 bouquet of scratch tickets.

In total there are more than 125 live and silent auction items and raffle prizes up for grabs, donated by dozens of local businesses, families, and organizations.

“The list is enormous,” Hernandez said. “They’ve all donated baskets, time, services, or came and helped organize what was there.”

Auction paddles cost $5. The paddle numbers can be used for both the silent and live auction.

The sophomore class will also be offering child care services during the auction. Pre-registration is required.

Hernandez, who has attended the auction for years, said she has a greater appreciation for all the time and energy previous junior classes have poured into making the event a success.

“Now that I understand, I’m in awe at how they ran it,” she said.
