WEEK AHEAD: Abington Celebrates Christmas this weekend


It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

The Abington Celebrates’ action-packed Christmas Weekend kicks off Friday evening, Dec. 8th with the popular Ugly Sweater Ball hosted by the Abington Lions Club at the American Legion Post 112 from 7-11 p.m. $25 each. For reservations contact abingtonmalions.org.  

On Saturday morning, Dec. 9, the Friends of Abington Seniors host the annual “Breakfast with Santa” from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Abington Senior Center.  Cost is $5 per person and the Children’s Store is available for kids to shop for loved ones. All items are $1 each.

From 3 p.m. – 6 p.m., Island Grove will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland.  Santa will make his big arrival via Abington Fire Truck on Park Avenue at 3:15 p.m.  From there, enjoy a magical afternoon with Santa and Mrs. Claus in the Gingerbread Cabin, Buddy the Elf and the Grinch, train displays, photo stops, caroling, refreshments, demonstrations, activities and more all provided by local non-profits and organizations.  The Lighting of the Bandstand will be at 5:30 p.m. by the 2023 Honoree AHS Football Coach Jim Kelliher.

On Sunday, December 10th, the fun continues with Pup Pics with Santa from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., presented by the Friends of Abington Dog Park inside the Gingerbread Cabin at Island Grove, 200 Park Ave.  Pictures are $20 each, and all dogs must be on a leash. 

If bowling is your thing, Abington News is hosting a Holiday Bowling Tournament at Webster Timber Lanes, 460 Bedford St. Register at webster.candlepin.com.  Proceeds to benefit Abington charities. The tournament is open to everyone and features prizes for non-league bowlers bowlers 17 and under.

Stop by the Dyer Memorial Library at 1 p.m. for a free presentation by Author, John Galluzzo, “The Boston Tea Party and The South Shore”.   

A Christmas Concert at 2:30 p.m. at United Church of Christ, which is located at 10 Bedford Street, caps off the weekend festivities with the joyful and upbeat “South Coast Brass Band” hosted by the Abington Summer Concerts.  The event is free but donations are welcome.

In addition, donate a canned item for the Abington Food Panty and get a photo with Santa at Seoane’s Garden Center on 12/2, 12/3, 12/9 and 12/10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
