Most of the week’s energy is being sucked into the storm system that’s going to roar across the region Tuesday.
Forecasters seem largely in agreement that the Abington area will see between 8 and 12 inches of snow, with wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour and white-out conditions at times. Snow is expected to start falling in the pre-down hours, come down pretty good most of the day, and taper off in the early evening.

“We are getting plows and sanders ready to go,” said Public Works Director John Stone.
Yes, trash will be impacted. The Health Department has canceled trash pickup for Tuesday, pushing the schedule back one day.
Abington students will also get their first snow day of the year Tuesday. The forecasts were uniform enough that Schools Superintendent Peter Schafer was able to make the call Monday afternoon.

In addition, the Abington Food Pantry has announced it will not be open Tuesday due to the storm, and will instead reopen next Tuesday.
Abington Fire Department is passing along a few tips to help stay safe during the storm:
- Ensure all heating vents are clear of snow
- If using a generator, operate it away from the home — not in a garage or near windows and doors.
- Don’t stick your hands in the snowblower to unclog it, even if it’s shut off.
- When shoveling, take adequate breaks.
It all means although we didn’t get a White Christmas, we will have a white Valentine’s Day.
HALF DAY FRIDAY BEFORE SCHOOL VACATION WEEK
It’s February Vacation next week for Abington public schools. And classrooms will empty out early on Friday as it’s a half day. Teachers and professional staff will stay behind for professional development. High School students are dismissed at 10:45 a.m., Middle School students at 11:10 a.m., Woodsdale students at 11:40 a.m., and Beaver Brook students at Noon.
ESPN HOCKEY BROADCASTER HELPING CALL GREEN WAVE HOCKEY MONDAY NIGHT
Monday is Senior Night for the Green Wave boys hockey team and a special guest will help with the call. ESPN hockey broadcaster John Buccigross, who’s nephew Zach is an assistant captain on the team, will join Abington CAM’s Matt Nelson as a special commentator for the game against Cohasset. Before the puck drops at 6:40 p.m. inside the Rockland Ice Arena, the #23 ranked Green Wave hockey program will honor its 10 seniors.
WHALEN, KELLY NOT SEEKING REELECTION TO BOARD OF HEALTH
Both seats on the Board of Health are open for grabs as the two incumbents will not be running for reelection. Kevin Whalen told Abington News Monday that has enjoyed his time on the board but will increasingly have to focus more time on family-related matters. Clay Kelly also confirmed that he is not running again. So far, nobody has taken out papers for either Board of Health seat.
Three candidates have taken out papers to run for the Board of Selectmen: incumbent Tim Chapin, Jason Harris, of Constitution Avenue, and the town’s Building Commissioner, and Paul Bunker, of Peregrine Road, the chairman of the Conservation Commission. School Committee member Heidi Hernandez, of Orange Street, is running for reelection. She is so far joined by Pam Neely, of Adams Street. Gail Bergin, of Morton Street, Mary Gillis, of Temple Street, and Henry DiCarlo, of Central Street, are each looking for another term on the Library Board of Trustees; Rick Collins, of Orange Street, is seeking a third term on the Planning Board; Ellen Delany, of Washington Street, is running again for the Housing Authority; and Mulberry Drive resident Tom Dion is seeking another term as a Water Commissioner. Candidates need 50 signatures from registered Abington voters to make the ballot. All signatures must be turned in by March 11, at 5 p.m.
