ABINGTON BOYS BASKETBALL IN COTTER TOURNAMENT FINALS WEDNESDAY
Abington boys basketball team is in the finals of the Shawn P. Cotter Memorial Basketball Tournament. The surging Green Wave defeated Cape Cod Academy Monday night 67-51. They will face North Quincy Wednesday night at 7 p.m., at the Abington High gymnasium. Cotter was a longtime Abington Junior High School teacher and coach before becoming a lawyer and serving as Town Counsel.

CORMIER PULLS PAPERS FOR BOTH WATER COMMISSIONER SEATS
William Cormier has pulled nomination papers for both open seats on the town’s Board of Water Commissioners. The seat held by Tom Dion is up for re-election; the seat held by Paul Mollica is also up as Mollica was appointed to fill the vacant seat last spring. Dion, of Mulberry Road, who won the seat after running a write-in campaign last year, has pulled nomination papers for re-election.
Three candidates have taken out papers to run for the Board of Selectmen: incumbent Tim Chapin, Jason Harris, of Constitution Avenue, and the town’s Building Commissioner, and Paul Bunker, of Peregrine Road, the chairman of the Conservation Commission. School Committee member Heidi Hernandez, of Orange Street, is running for reelection. She is so far joined by Pam Neely, of Adams Street. Gail Bergin, of Morton Street, Mary Gillis, of Temple Street, and Henry DiCarlo, of Central Street, are each looking for another term on the Library Board of Trustees; Rick Collins, of Orange Street, is seeking a third term on the Planning Board; Ellen Delany, of Washington Street, is running again for the Housing Authority. Nobody has taken out papers to run for the two open Board of Health seats. Candidates need 50 signatures from registered Abington voters to make the ballot. All signatures must be turned in by March 11, at 5 p.m.
ABINGTON NATIVE MAKES HALLMARK MOVIE DEBUT
Stephen Coe, the Abington native turned celebrity chef, made his acting debut over the weekend, portraying himself in the Hallmark movie “A Taste Of Love.” The movie stars Erin Cahill, Jesse Kove, and the legendary Martin Kove. Coe, who defeated Bobby Flay on his own competitive cooking show in 2020, is the owner of the Early Bird Restaurant in Kingston, as well as two food trucks: Lobsta Love and the SWAT Culinary Assault Vehicle.
SPINNEY 4TH IN D4 WRESTLING TOURNEY; HEADS TO STATES
Abington High School Senior James Spinney will be competing this coming weekend in the All-State wrestling tournament. Spinney, who competes on the Rockland High team (Abington doesn’t have a wrestling team) finished fourth in last weekend’s Division 3 meet, wrestling in the 105-pound weight class.
SWASEY, VAN NEST APPOINTED TO CONSERVATION COMMISSION
Selectmen have appointed Joshua Swasey and Justin Van Nest as associate members of the Conservation Commission. Brian Benson, who had also applied for a slot, withdrew prior to the vote.
CHARTER REVIEW HOSTING PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED CHANGES ON FEB. 29
The committee charged with considering changes to the Town Charter is holding a public meeting Feb. 29 where residents can come ask questions and provide thoughts. The town is required to review the charter every 10 years and make recommendations on any possible updates. The current iteration of the committee, which has been meeting more more than 18 months, is proposing more than a dozen changes, including updating the Abington Board of Selectmen to the Abington Selectboard, encouraging boards and committees to adopt strategies that improve public oureach and involvement, altering the way board vacancies are filled, and revising the budget presentation timeline. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Town Hall.
