NO INJURIES IN FRIDAY NIGHT HOUSE FIRE ON HIGH STREET

A space heater is blamed for a late night housefire on High Street that brought firefighters from eight neighboring communities. The fire at 287 High Street broke out about 11:45 p.m. By the time firefighters arrived, heavy flames were coming out the rear of the 235-year-old home, according to a release from Abington Fire posted on Facebook. Abington firefighters struck a second and third alarms, bringing in mutual aid from Rockland, Whitman, Hanson, Holbrook, Weymouth, East Bridgewater, Norwell, and Brockton. It took firefighters 45 minutes to get the fire under control. “The original home was built in 1810 with an approximate 140 ft. diameter and 50 ft. depth, presenting multiple challenges based on the interior renovations throughout the years, as well as the exterior layout of the building,” Fire Chief Jack Glynn wrote in the release. “The cause of the fire was accidental in nature, started by an object being in close contact to a space heater.” No injuries were reported, and everyone fled the house safely.

WOODS THROWS HAT IN SELECTMEN RING

Former Selectman Roger Woods is once again seeking a seat on the town’s executive board, making it a four-man race for two seats. He joins incumbent Tim Chapin, as well as Paul Bunker and Jason Harris, all of whom have taken out nomination papers.

All nomination papers are due back March 11 by 5 p.m. Currently, School Committee member Heidi Hernandez, of Orange Street, is running for reelection. She is joined by Pam Neely, of Adams Street. Gail Bergin, of Morton Street, Mary Gillis, of Temple Street, and Henry DiCarlo, of Central Street, are each looking for another term on the Library Board of Trustees; Rick Collins, of Orange Street, is seeking a third term on the Planning Board; Ellen Delany, of Washington Street, is running again for the Housing Authority; and Mulberry Drive resident Tom Dion is seeking another term as a Water Commissioner.
