WEEK AHEAD: Near-total eclipse on Monday; candidates forum Thursday; town yard sale Saturday; Green Wave schedule

Got Eclipse Fever yet?

Maybe you should. Sure, Abington isn’t in the path to see totality. The nearest spot to see the full solar eclipse is in upstate Vermont. But what Abington will experience Monday afternoon will still be remarkable.

About 93 percent of the sun will be blocked out down here in our little town. According to WGBH — the home of legendary science television show Nova — “the sky will start darkening around 2:16 p.m. as the moon begins passing in front of the sun, peak at 3:29 p.m., and clear up at 4:39 p.m.”

To put this in perspective, the eclipse seen over Abington on Monday will be much more pronounced than the one we saw back in 2017, when the nearest point of totality was over the Carolinas — and even that event was still pretty cool.

As a further sign a higher power wants you to appreciate this moment, the weather on Monday is the nicest we’ve had in months.

Reminders are out to not look directly up at the sun without special protective lenses, and even then it’s still not a great idea.

Abington Health Department said demand has been high for its supply of special sunglasses, to the point they ran out by Monday morning.

Health Agent Chris Schultz said one trick is to hold a kitchen colander near the ground; the holes will create a shadow allowing viewers to see the nearly covered sun.

“The only problem is that the colander strains the eyes,” he said. [Insert eye roll]

BIPARTISAN CANDIDATES FORUM ON THURSDAY

The Abington Republican Town Committee, Democratic Town Committee, and ASPIRE are combining efforts to host a candidate’s forum this Thursday at 7 p.m. There’s only one competitive race on this year’s Town Election ballot: Tim Chapin, Roger Woods, and Paul Bunker are running for two open seats on the Board of Selectmen. Residents can email questions for the candidates to abingtonaspire@gmail.com. Voters may also submit written questions during the forum. Candidates without opponents will be able to give brief remarks. The forum will take place in the Cotter Meeting Room at Town Hall and be recorded by Abington CAM.
