It’s Founders Day Weekend, that means three days of family friendly events, highlighted with fireworks on Saturday night.

Abington Celebrates, a non-profit comprised of a volunteer committee of residents, is pleased to present the 10th year of Founders’ Day Weekend.

Festivities begin on Friday, June 6th, with the Kick-off Cook Out from 5-7 p.m. at the United Church of Christ (UCC), 10 Bedford Street. Hosted by UCC, the cookout includes free hotdogs and hamburgers and raffles; the UCC Thrift Shop will also be open for bargain shoppers. And then from 7:30-8:30 p.m. there will be a performance by the Abington Town Choir, Abington Community Band, and Island Grove Chorus at the high school auditorium.

Children’s activities begin Saturday morning with the much-loved Fishing Derby from 9:30-1:00 p.m. on Central Street, across from the DPW barn and police station. Children ages 6-14 (accompanied by an adult) should bring their own fishing pole but bait is provided. Prizes will be awarded for best catches, and all participants can indulge in free hotdogs and snow cones provided by Parks and Recreation Department. “Chalk It Up” will take place at the police station parking lot, giving kids a chance to draw with chalk on the pavement.

From 10 a.m.-Noon, the Abington Garden Club will host “Make & Take a Plant” for kids at the Butterfly Park on Central Street.

Adults may want to visit the Linh Quang Buddhist Meditation Temple on the corner of Washington and Central Streets from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. for a tour, and visit Dyer Memorial Library Open House from Noon-3 p.m. at 28 Centre Ave.

At 10:30 a.m., the Abington Historical Commission, Community Preservation Commission and the Historical Society of Old Abington will unveil Interpretive Signs at the Grove followed by a guided history tour. Those interested should meet at Lake Street side of Bridge.

Gates open at Memorial Field for the fireworks and family fun at 5 p.m.  Abington Summer Concerts and the Abington Cultural Council are sponsoring the band The Wolfpack, who will play pop, rock and country covers from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Various non-profits and community groups will be selling food and there will be inflatables and activities for the kids, a hilarious race of inflatable costumed characters at 5:30 p.m., a Kids Fun Run at 5:45 p.m., and a Boston Tae Kwon Do demonstration at 6:15 p.m.

The American Legion will be selling beer, wine, burgers and hotdogs on the hill behind the Legion Post, and Abington Celebrates will have a 50/50 raffle and merchandise for sale. The Fireworks go off at 9:00. with a 22-minute display presented by NorthStar Fireworks.

Events culminate on Sunday with “Worship at the Grove” at Island Grove Park, hosted by UCC, at the Abolitionist Stone near the point at 10 a.m.

Anyone attending the fireworks is reminded that no alcoholic beverages, grills, propane tanks or open flames are allowed. Glass containers, firearms, weapons, sharp objects and personal fireworks are also prohibited. No bicycles or pets except service dogs will be permitted on the field.

Abington Celebrates extends a big thank you to its sponsors. The event is free but donations are welcome at the gates. For additional information, flyers are available at Town Hall or on Abington Celebrates’ Facebook page.
